Perante os problemas urbanos existentes e tendo como cenário a crise econômico-social as cidades procuram estratégias que melhorem suas condições econômicas, ambientais e sociais focando no projeto e uso dos espaços abertos como catalisadores do desenvolvimento da comunidade. Hoje, a infraestrutura verde representa a melhor oportunidade para as áreas urbanas, revitalizando a economia local, tratando os problemas ambientais e promovendo a melhoria da qualidade de vida dos moradores. A infraestrutura tradicional - a infraestrutura cinza - trata dos sistemas de circulação, abastecimento de água, energia e outros serviços necessários ao funcionamento da cidade. Os elementos de seu sistema precisam de planejamento, desenho e pesquisa praticados com antecedência no seu uso.
