This article is an analysis of the federal government housing program "My House, My Life", which aims to reduce the Brazilian housing deficit and serve as an anti-cyclical measure at the economic level. Very successful experiences in other emerging nations indicate that many advances can be reached in the housing area and these experiences could have been used in the Program being analyzed here. In many successful cases, a solid institutional credit structure for the low income families helped lay the foundations for the policies.

This work will also present an analysis of the housing deficit and a comparison between Mexican housing finance and the Brazilian program, as well as a compared approach relating the concepts adopted: the sector policies, the dynamics of the sector and an analysis of the role played by the State in this process. Building upon previous experiences of emerging economy countries, this work intends to take subsidies for assessment and improvement of the solutions adopted.
